The Bodrum peninsula is more than beaches and marinas. Between the bays lie the castle of the Leleges, who lived here before the Greeks, fishing villages above sunken ancient walls and villages with windmills on the hills. We drive once around the peninsula – with time for lunch by the water.
Highlights
- Pedasa: hill fort of the Leleges with views across the peninsula
- Gümüşlük: remains of the ancient port of Myndos under water, Rabbit Island
- Lunch by the water in Gümüşlük
- Yalıkavak: old windmill and marina
- Göltürkbükü: the elegant bay in the north
- Pick-up from hotel, cruise port or airport optional
Full description
We start at Pedasa near Konacık, a settlement of the Leleges, who lived on the peninsula before the Carians and Greeks. Walls, a tower and a sanctuary of Athena lie in a pine forest high above the coast – a quiet place most visitors never see. We continue via Ortakent with the tower of Mustafa Pasha to Gümüşlük in the west. Here stood Myndos, the port city whose walls partly lie in the shallow water; in calm sea you can wade across to Rabbit Island.
After lunch at the fishing bay we drive to Yalıkavak with its old windmill and marina, then to the north coast at Göltürkbükü, where the jetties of the beach clubs reach into the sea. On the way back we stop at a viewpoint above the bays. Order and stops depend on the season and your wishes.
