Day 2: Phaselis - Myra - sunken city of Kekova - Kale Castle (Simena) - Kaş

Early in the morning we drive along the south-western Mediterranean coast to Phaselis (Greek Φασηλίς, 1 Macc 15;23).

On our tour we will see the main avenue, agoras, theatre, baths, harbour walls, aqueducts and ruins from the East Roman era.

Phaselis (Greek Φασηλίς) is an ancient city in Lycia (Asia Minor, today Turkey)

Our journey then takes us to Demre, ancient Myra (Acts 27;5), birthplace and place of work of St. Nicholas. Here we visit the episcopal church of St. Nicholas, not far from which you can also find the acropolis of Myra and the famous Lycian rock tombs on the mountain slopes. It should be noted that the imposing Roman theatre has only been completely excavated in recent years.
You then continue by private glass-bottom boat (for a view under water) to the sunken city of Kekova (Dolkisthe).

Myra, today's Demre, is an ancient city in Lycia, Turkey.

From the boat we will also see Kale Castle (Simena) and the pillar tombs in front of it, which extend across the whole area (up to the slopes and into the water).
Day's distance approx. 194 km
Dinner and overnight stay in/near Kaş (Habesos, Habesa, Antiphellos) or Patara (Greek Πάταρα, Arsinoë, Acts 21;1).

Day 3: Patara - Letoon - Xanthos - Fethiye

Today our route takes us through the picturesque little town of Kalkan to Patara (Greek Πάταρα, later Arsinoë, Acts 21;1) with its beautiful beach kilometres long. We will visit the ancient site of Letoon (Ancient Greek: Λητώον - Lētōon), where the goddess Leto gave birth to her twins Artemis and Apollo.

Patara lies near the mouth of the ancient river Xanthos, on the Mediterranean coast of Lycia in present-day Turkey.

We continue to Xanthos (Gr. Ξάνθος), the former capital of Lycia and founding place of the world's first republic. Here we will look at the pillar tombs and the agora.
We will arrive in Fethiye, ancient Telmessos (Lycian Telebehi; Greek Τελμησσός, also Telmissos).

This historic centre is in a very well-preserved condition and thus makes it very easy to imagine life in antiquity. On the marble-paved streets we come to the theatre, temple complexes, agoras, the Library of Celsus and the Temple of Hadrian. The Church of Mary in particular gained great importance through the Third Ecumenical Council held here in AD 431.

✦ No shopping stops: our promise

Visits to carpet, jewellery or leather businesses are expressly not part of this trip. Your time belongs to the biblical and historical sites and the content of your study tour, not to the sales rooms.

Only at the express request of the group or individual travellers do we organise such a visit separately and outside the programme. The shuttle or taxi is then paid for by the shop concerned.

Our advice: be careful with conspicuously cheap travel offers. They are often subsidised by commissions from sales visits – with compulsory shopping stops, sales pressure and often inflated prices. Never buy under time pressure, compare prices and ask for a receipt and a certificate of authenticity.
