Why Magdeburg?

Magdeburg was first mentioned in 805 and was the favourite residence of Otto the Great, who was buried in its cathedral in 973. In the Middle Ages Magdeburg Law spread to many towns across Central and Eastern Europe. In 1631 the city was almost completely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War; later its mayor Otto von Guericke made it famous with his hemisphere experiments. On request we also show you the links between East and West – from the Byzantine empress Theophanu to Ernst Reuter, who fled the Nazis to Turkey.

Route

  • Magdeburg Cathedral of St Maurice and St Catherine
Begun in 1209, it is regarded as the first Gothic cathedral on German soil. Otto the Great and his wife Editha are buried here; the statue of St Maurice is one of the earliest depictions of an African in European art.
  • Cathedral Square and Ottonianum Museum
Optional: finds from the Ottonian era and the history of the imperial palace.
  • Green Citadel
The last major building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser – with a pink façade, golden spheres and a green roof.
  • Monastery of Our Lady
The oldest surviving building in the city, a Romanesque monastery that is now an art museum with a sculpture park.
  • Old Market with Town Hall and Magdeburg Rider
The historic centre with the town hall, the Eulenspiegel fountain and a copy of the 13th-century Magdeburg Rider statue.
  • St John's Church and the Elbe
Martin Luther preached here in 1524; from the Elbe riverbank you enjoy views of the cathedral and skyline. Plus the story of Otto von Guericke and the Magdeburg hemispheres.
  • Optional: East meets West
Traces of Bruno Taut and his colourful housing estates, Ernst Reuter, and Mehmed Ali Pasha, born in Magdeburg as Ludwig Karl Friedrich Detroit, who became an Ottoman field marshal.
