Why Augsburg?

Augsburg is one of Germany's oldest cities: around 15 BC a Roman camp was founded here, which grew into the town of Augusta Vindelicum. In the 15th and 16th centuries, merchant families such as the Fuggers and the Welsers made Augsburg one of Europe's leading financial centres. The Augsburg Confession was presented here in 1530, and the Peace of Augsburg was concluded in 1555. Master builder Elias Holl shaped the Renaissance cityscape with his Town Hall. Since 2019, Augsburg's historic water management system has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Route

  • Rathausplatz and Perlach Tower
The heart of the old town with the Augustus Fountain. When open, the Perlach Tower next to the Town Hall offers a wide view over the city.
  • Town Hall with the Golden Hall
Built by Elias Holl in 1615–1620, one of the most important secular Renaissance buildings north of the Alps. The magnificent Golden Hall can be visited (admission fee).
  • Augsburg Cathedral
Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with the famous Prophet Windows, among the oldest surviving figurative stained-glass windows.
  • Fuggerei
Founded by Jakob Fugger in 1521 and still inhabited today – the oldest social housing complex in the world still in use. With a small museum (admission fee).
  • Maximilianstraße with Mercury and Hercules Fountains
The grand boulevard of the former Imperial City with Renaissance fountains, the Fugger Houses and the Schaezlerpalais with its Rococo ballroom.
  • Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra
At the southern end of Maximilianstraße: a late Gothic basilica above the tombs of the city's patron saints Ulrich and Afra, next to the Protestant church of St. Ulrich.
  • Optional: Lech Quarter and Mozart House
A stroll along the canals of the Lech Quarter, part of the World Heritage Site, and a visit to the birthplace of Leopold Mozart (admission fee).
