Why Bremen?

Bremen looks back on more than 1,200 years of history: a bishopric was founded here in 787, and the city later became an important member of the Hanseatic League. Maritime trade brought prosperity that can still be seen in the buildings around the market square. The Town Hall and the Roland, symbols of civic freedom, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004. As the 'Free Hanseatic City of Bremen', the city together with Bremerhaven forms Germany's smallest federal state. The Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale are known around the world.

Route

  • Market Square and Town Hall (UNESCO)
The Gothic Town Hall with its Weser Renaissance façade is one of the most magnificent town halls in Germany. Interior tours subject to availability (admission fee).
  • Bremen Roland (UNESCO)
The stone statue of 1404 on the market square is regarded as a symbol of the city's rights and freedom.
  • Bremen Town Musicians
Gerhard Marcks' bronze sculpture on the west side of the Town Hall – donkey, dog, cat and rooster from the Grimm fairy tale.
  • St. Peter's Cathedral
The cathedral on the market square dates back to the Middle Ages; its crypts and cathedral museum are well worth a visit.
  • Böttcherstraße
The lane redesigned by Ludwig Roselius in the 1920s and 1930s, with expressionist brick architecture and a carillon.
  • Schlachte on the Weser
The riverside promenade, once the city's harbour, is today a popular place for strolling and stopping for a bite.
  • Schnoor Quarter
Bremen's oldest quarter with small houses from the 15th to 18th centuries, narrow lanes, shops and cafés.
