Why Darmstadt?

For centuries Darmstadt was the residence of the landgraves and later Grand Dukes of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1899 Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig founded an artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe, which became a centre of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil). Since 2021 the Mathildenhöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After heavy destruction in the Second World War, Darmstadt developed into a city of science with universities and research institutes. Modern architecture such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser's Waldspirale complements its historic heritage.

Route

  • Mathildenhöhe (UNESCO)
The Art Nouveau artists' colony with the Ernst Ludwig House, artists' houses and exhibition building was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.
  • Wedding Tower
Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich and built in 1908 to mark the wedding of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, the tower is the city's landmark.
  • Russian Chapel
This Russian Orthodox church with golden domes was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II, who was married to the Darmstadt princess Alix.
  • Residential Palace and Market Square
The palace of the landgraves and grand dukes in the city centre is now used by the Technical University; the market square lies beside it.
  • Luisenplatz and Herrngarten
From Luisenplatz with the Ludwig Monument, known as the 'Langer Ludwig', the walk continues into the Herrngarten, the former princely park with the Prinz-Georg-Palais.
  • Waldspirale
This colourful residential building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, with its planted roof, shows a very different, modern side of Darmstadt.
  • Optional: Hessian State Museum
The museum presents art, natural history and geology, including finds from the Messel Pit (admission not included).
