Why Eisenach?

Above Eisenach rises Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia lived here, and it was here that Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1521/22. Luther had already spent several years in Eisenach as a schoolboy. In 1685 Johann Sebastian Bach was born in the town and baptised in St. George's Church. In 1817 students gathered for the Wartburg Festival, an early event in the German movement for unity and freedom.

Route

  • Wartburg Castle (UNESCO)
With its 12th-century Romanesque palace, the Festival Hall and Luther's room, the castle is a key site of German history. Admission for the interior is not included.
  • Luther House
One of the town's oldest half-timbered houses, where Luther is said to have lived as a pupil. Today a museum on Luther and his Bible translation.
  • Bach House
A museum on the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach with a collection of historic musical instruments, near his birthplace on the Frauenplan.
  • St. George's Church
Bach was baptised in this church on the market square, and Luther preached here. Inside, tombs recall the Landgraves of Thuringia.
  • Market Square and Town Hall
The market with the town hall and the town palace forms the centre of the old town, surrounded by townhouses from various periods.
  • St. Nicholas Gate and Church
The Romanesque St. Nicholas Gate is Eisenach's only surviving town gate; beside it stands the Romanesque St. Nicholas Church.
  • Optional: Fraternity Monument or Automobile Museum
A walk to the Burschenschaft Monument on the Göpelskuppe with a view of the Wartburg, or a visit to the museum of Eisenach's automotive history (admission not included).
