Why Hamburg?
Hamburg owes its rise to trade. As a leading member of the Hanseatic League and later as a Free and Hanseatic City, it shaped northern Europe's maritime commerce for centuries. After the Great Fire of 1842 and the destruction of the Second World War, Hamburg reinvented itself again and again. The Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus District with the Chilehaus have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. With HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie, the city today also shows its modern face.
Route
- Hamburg City Hall
The Neo-Renaissance showpiece on Rathausmarkt, seat of parliament and senate – a symbol of Hamburg's proud civic tradition. - Inner Alster & Jungfernstieg
Hamburg's elegant promenade along the Inner Alster lake, with views of the Alster Arcades. - Kontorhaus District & Chilehaus (UNESCO)
Expressionist brick office buildings of the 1920s; the Chilehaus with its striking tip resembling a ship's bow. - Speicherstadt (UNESCO)
The world's largest contiguous warehouse complex in brick, built on oak piles, with canals and bridges. - HafenCity & Elbphilharmonie
The new waterfront district and the concert hall opened in 2017; the public Plaza offers sweeping views over the port and city. - St. Michael's Church (Michel)
Hamburg's landmark and one of the most important baroque churches in northern Germany; tower ascent optional (admission not included). - Optional: Landungsbrücken & Old Elbe Tunnel
Watch the harbour at work and walk through the tunnel under the Elbe opened in 1911 – a harbour boat tour is possible on request.
