Why Kassel?

For centuries Kassel was the residence of the Landgraves and Electors of Hesse-Kassel. From 1696 Landgrave Charles had the mountain park with the Hercules monument and the cascades laid out on the slopes of the Habichtswald; his successors added Wilhelmshöhe Palace and the Löwenburg in the English landscape style. Since 2013 the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Kassel the Brothers Grimm collected a large part of their Children's and Household Tales, and since 1955 the city has hosted the documenta.
