Why Lorsch?

Lorsch Abbey was founded in 764 – first on an island in the Weschnitz river, today's Altenmünster, before the monks moved a few years later to the nearby dune. Under the protection of Charlemagne, Lorsch became an imperial abbey and one of the important intellectual centres of the Frankish Empire; Louis the German, among others, was buried here. The surviving King's Hall is one of the few largely intact buildings from the Carolingian period in Germany. Lorsch Abbey has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, and the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia from the abbey library is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World.

Route

  • King's Hall (UNESCO)
The Carolingian gatehouse with its colourful stone façade is the symbol of Lorsch. Your guide explains the building's purpose, which is still debated today.
  • Abbey grounds & church remains
Walk across the extensive abbey grounds with the surviving part of the abbey church, the monastery wall and the marked outlines of former buildings.
  • Lorsch Museum Centre
Finds from the abbey's history, models of the complex and background on the library, the Lorsch Codex and the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia (admission not included).
  • Altenmünster
The original founding site of the abbey from 764 on a former island in the Weschnitz – a quiet place where the abbey's beginnings come to life.
  • Lauresham Open-Air Laboratory
Reconstructed Carolingian manor with buildings, fields and animals, showing what everyday life was like around 800 (admission not included).
  • Lorsch old town
Short walk through the town centre with the half-timbered town hall on the market square and the lanes around the abbey.
  • Optional: herb garden & tobacco museum
To finish, the abbey herb garden inspired by the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia, or a look at the history of tobacco growing in Lorsch.
