Why Maulbronn?
Founded in 1147, Maulbronn Cistercian Monastery is regarded as the most completely preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Its buildings clearly show the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. The World Heritage site also includes the elaborate system of lakes, ditches and channels the monks used for fish farming, mills and agriculture. After the Reformation, the monastery became a Protestant seminary in 1556, attended by Johannes Kepler, Friedrich Hölderlin and Hermann Hesse, among others.
Route
- Monastery courtyard & farm buildings
The spacious courtyard with mill, storehouses, granary and monastery wall shows how a Cistercian abbey functioned as a self-sufficient economic unit. - Paradise porch (UNESCO)
The early Gothic porch of the abbey church from the early 13th century is considered an outstanding example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. - Abbey church
Romanesque basilica with rood screen, choir stalls and a large stone crucifix. Your guide explains the austere architecture of the Cistercians. - Cloister & fountain house
The cloister connects the enclosure buildings. In the fountain house with its three-tiered fountain, the monks washed before meals. - Monks' refectory & chapter house
The monks' dining hall with its impressive vaulting, and the chapter house where the community gathered daily. - Faust Tower & monastery lakes
According to legend, Doctor Faustus once worked at the monastery. A walk leads to the Tiefer See lake and parts of the historic water system. - Optional: monastery museum & Maulbronn village
Exhibitions on the history of the monastery and seminary, and a stop at one of the inns around the monastery courtyard.
