Why Munich?
Munich was first mentioned in records in 1158, and Henry the Lion is regarded as its founder. From 1180 the House of Wittelsbach shaped the city for centuries – as dukes, electors and, from 1806, as kings of Bavaria. King Ludwig I in particular transformed Munich into a city of the arts in the 19th century, with grand boulevards, museums and monumental buildings. In the 20th century Munich witnessed dark chapters of German history, was rebuilt after the war and hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.
