Why Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

Rothenburg became a Free Imperial City in 1274 and flourished in the late Middle Ages, the period from which many of its buildings date. During the Thirty Years' War the town was taken by Tilly's troops in 1631; the legend of the Master Draught tells how former mayor Nusch is said to have saved the town by emptying a huge tankard of wine in one go. Afterwards Rothenburg lost its importance, which is why its medieval townscape has been largely preserved. The almost completely preserved town wall with its towers and gates still encircles the old town today.

Route

  • Market Square and Town Hall
The town hall combines a Gothic and a Renaissance building. The town hall tower offers a wide view over the rooftops (admission not included).
  • Councillors' Tavern with Clock
Several times a day, the clock figures on the façade of the Councillors' Tavern recall the legend of the Master Draught.
  • St. James's Church
The town's main Gothic church, home to the Altar of the Holy Blood by Tilman Riemenschneider. Admission not included.
  • Plönlein and Siebers Tower
Probably the town's most photographed spot: a small triangular square with a half-timbered house between two gate towers.
  • Hospital Quarter and Hospital Bastion
The southern part of the old town with the former hospital and the mighty bastion at the town gate.
  • Town Wall Walkway
A walk along the covered walkway of the wall opens up unusual views into the lanes and gardens of the old town.
  • Optional: Castle Garden
The garden on the site of the former castle offers a lovely view over the Tauber valley.
