Why Völklingen?
An ironworks was founded in Völklingen in 1873 and a few years later taken over by the Röchling family, who developed it into one of the major steelworks on the Saar. For more than a century the works shaped the town and the lives of thousands of workers' families. Pig iron production ended in 1986, but the plant was preserved in its entirety. In 1994 UNESCO inscribed the Völklingen Ironworks on the World Heritage List as the first industrial monument from the heyday of industrialisation. Today it is both a monument and a venue for major exhibitions.
Route
- Völklingen Ironworks (UNESCO)
An introduction to the history of the works: from its foundation and the Röchling era to its closure and inscription as a World Heritage Site. - Blower Hall
The monumental machine hall with its huge gas blowing engines that once supplied the blast furnaces with air. - Burden Shed and Sinter Plant
This is where ore, coke and additives were mixed and prepared for the blast furnaces – today often used for exhibitions. - Blast Furnaces and Viewing Platform
Stairs and walkways lead up to the blast furnaces, with wide views over the site and the Saar valley. - The Paradise
Part of the former coking plant that nature has reclaimed – a striking contrast between industry and wilderness. - Völklingen Town Centre
A walk through the town that grew with the ironworks, with insights into workers' culture and urban development. - Optional: Saarbrücken
If you wish, a detour to the nearby state capital with the Ludwigskirche, Saarbrücken Castle and St. Johanner Markt.
