Why Weimar?

Around 1800 Weimar was the intellectual centre of Germany. Under Duchess Anna Amalia and her son Carl August, Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland lived and worked here. In 1919 Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar, and in the same year the National Assembly met in the National Theatre and gave the Weimar Republic its constitution. Classical Weimar and the Bauhaus sites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Just a few kilometres away, the Buchenwald Memorial recalls the darkest period of German history.

Route

  • Theaterplatz with the Goethe-Schiller Monument
The famous double statue in front of the German National Theatre, where the Weimar Constitution was adopted in 1919.
  • Goethe's House on the Frauenplan (UNESCO)
Goethe lived and worked here for around five decades. His study, library and collections are largely preserved in their original state.
  • Schiller's House (UNESCO)
In the last years of his life Schiller wrote "William Tell" here, among other works.
  • Market Square and St. Peter and Paul's Church
The town hall, the Cranach House and the Herder Church with its famous Cranach altarpiece.
  • Duchess Anna Amalia Library (UNESCO)
Its Rococo Hall is one of the most beautiful library halls in Germany and was carefully restored after the 2004 fire.
  • Park on the Ilm with Goethe's Garden House (UNESCO)
The extensive landscape park along the Ilm, partly designed with Goethe's involvement, with his first Weimar residence.
  • Optional: Bauhaus Museum Weimar
The museum presents the beginnings of the famous school of art and design founded in Weimar in 1919.
