Why Wernigerode?
Wernigerode lies at the foot of the Harz and for centuries was the residence of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode. The old town preserves a dense ensemble of splendid half-timbered houses from several centuries, above all the town hall on the market square. The poet Hermann Löns called Wernigerode "the colourful town in the Harz". Above the town rises Wernigerode Castle, which received its present historicist appearance in the 19th century under Prince Otto of Stolberg-Wernigerode. The steam-powered Harz narrow-gauge railway also starts here on its way into the mountains.
Route
- Town Hall and Market Square
With its pointed towers and rich carvings, the town hall is one of Germany's best-known half-timbered buildings. In front of it lies the market square with the Benefactors' Fountain. - Breite Straße
The old town's main shopping street with splendid townhouses, including the richly decorated Krummel House. - Smallest House and Leaning House
Two curiosities of the old town: a tiny half-timbered house in Kochstraße and a former mill building that leans noticeably to one side. - Oberpfarrkirchhof
A quiet quarter around St. Sylvester's Church with picturesque half-timbered houses away from the busy streets. - Wernigerode Castle
The fairytale castle above the town with the state rooms of the comital and princely family and wide views over the Harz. - Lustgarten and Orangery
The historic castle garden at the foot of the castle hill invites you to take a break in green surroundings. - Optional: Harz Narrow-Gauge Railway
A look at the steam locomotives at Wernigerode-Westerntor station, the starting point for trips to the Brocken.
