Why Würzburg?
For centuries Würzburg was the seat of the prince-bishops, who were both spiritual and secular rulers of Franconia. In the 18th century they had the Residence built to designs by Balthasar Neumann; the ceiling fresco above the staircase was painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The Würzburg Residence with its Court Gardens and Residence Square has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. In March 1945 the old town was largely destroyed and later rebuilt. In 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays in Würzburg.
Route
- Würzburg Residence (UNESCO)
One of the most important Baroque palaces in Europe. Highlights include the staircase with Tiepolo's ceiling fresco, the Imperial Hall and the Court Church. - Court Gardens
The Baroque garden behind the Residence with terraces, sculptures and ornate wrought-iron gates. - St. Kilian's Cathedral
One of Germany's great Romanesque churches, dedicated to Kilian, the apostle of Franconia, with tombs of the prince-bishops. - Neumünster
This church with its Baroque façade stands above the grave of St. Kilian. In the Lusamgärtchen behind it, a memorial recalls Walther von der Vogelweide. - Market Square and St. Mary's Chapel
The late Gothic Marienkapelle dominates the market square, next to the Haus zum Falken with its Rococo façade. - Old Main Bridge
The stone bridge with Baroque statues of saints is a popular meeting place – with views of the fortress and vineyards, ideally with a glass of Franconian wine. - Optional: Marienberg Fortress
The former castle of the prince-bishops above the Main, with the Prince's Garden and wide views over the city.
