The quiet coast of Kuşadası – Dilek Peninsula, Zeus Cave and Panionion
A day by the sea, away from the promenades: the bays of the Dilek Peninsula National Park, the Zeus Cave with its cool spring water, the federal sanctuary of the Ionians and the Byzantine castle of Kadıkalesi – private, from Kuşadası and Izmir.

Only half an hour south of Kuşadası's hotel blocks another coast begins: pine forests reaching down to the water, small pebble bays with clear sea, wild horses and turtles in the national park. In between lie places where the Ionian cities assembled and the Byzantines defended their coast. We take time to swim, to look and for fish by the water.
Highlights
- Dilek Peninsula National Park: pine forests and the bays of İçmeler, Aydınlık and Kavaklıburun
- Time to swim in clear water, view across to Samos
- Zeus Cave near Güzelçamlı – a dip in a cool mix of spring and sea water
- Panionion: meeting place of the Ionian League on the slope of Mycale
- Kadıkalesi (Anaia): Byzantine castle above the beach
- Seafood restaurant by the water for lunch
Full description
In the morning we drive south out of Kuşadası to Güzelçamlı. Right at the edge of the village lies the Zeus Cave, where spring water and sea mix – legend says the father of the gods hid here from a storm; today the cool, turquoise pool is the best place for a first swim. Above the village lie the remains of the Panionion, where the twelve cities of the Ionian League met for festivals and councils.
Then we enter the Dilek Peninsula National Park. The road winds past pines to the bays of İçmeler, Aydınlık and Kavaklıburun, where the water is crystal clear and Samos seems within reach. With a little luck you will see the park's wild horses. After swimming we eat fish by the water and on the way back stop at the Byzantine castle of Kadıkalesi, ancient Anaia, overlooking the bay of Kuşadası.
